Our National Symbols

The National Symbols of the Republic of Athabasca represent the historic, cultural, and political values of our republic. Adopted by common agreement, they represent first and foremost the will of the Athabascan people.

National Flag

Sovereign Colours

Designed by Andrew Snye in 2023, the "Sovereign Colours" has served as Athabasca's national flag since its founding. The four uniquely coloured bars serve a dual purpose in representing the Athabascan state. Each bar represents one of Athabasca's four fundamental values; innovation, liberty, enviornmentalism, and diversity, as well as being a simple depiction of the local landscape.

National Emblem

State Emblem

Codified in 2025, the State Emblem serve as one of Athabasca's most distinct symbols. Depicted is a tanning rack with a stylized pelt in the middle depicting a general landscape of Athabasca; including symbols such as the wildrose, canoe, an aurora borealis, and a smudging bowl. On each side of the rack is a branch, one representing an apple tree and another a pine tree, bundled in red ribbons depicting relevant years for Athabasca. On top is the national headdress of Athabasca, the toque, and below a gear cog. These symbols, when intertwined together, represents the various concepts, ambitions, and duties of Athabasca.

National Flower

Wildrose

A native flower of the region, the Rosa acicularis, commonly known as the Alberta Wildrose, grows abundantly in Athabasca. The wildrose is most often seen being used in local ceremonies, iconography, and events.

National Animal

Wood Bison

Native to the Athabascan region before the arrival of the first humans, the Wood Bison has long been a cherished symbol of strength by the Cree and Dene of the area. Being integral to the local ecosystem, the Wood Bison was forced to move further up north by the 20th century due to mass-hunting. Today, despite an endangered population and limited range, the Wood Bison still demonstrates perseverance and strength to those who share the same region as home, here in the Republic of Athabasca.
